Whether you’re beginning PHP, IOP, or MAT support with us, knowing what to bring — and what to leave at home — can help you feel confident and ready for the journey ahead. At Amity San Diego, we want your transition into care to be smooth, simple, and stress-free.

This guide outlines everything you’ll need to bring for outpatient treatment, plus a few tips to help you prepare mentally and emotionally for this next step.

Essentials to Bring

1. Valid Photo ID
A driver’s license, state ID, or passport is required for intake and medication administration.

2. Insurance Card & Payment Method
If applicable, bring your health insurance card and any payment method discussed with admissions (credit card, HSA card, etc.).

3. Prescription Medications (if applicable)
All medications must be in their original pharmacy containers, with correct labeling. Please include a list of current dosages and any allergy information.

4. Comfortable Clothing
We recommend casual, weather-appropriate outfits that are modest and easy to move in. Avoid anything with drug-related imagery or offensive language.

  • Layers (sweatshirts, jackets)

  • Closed-toe shoes

  • Workout wear (for optional wellness groups)

5. Notebook or Journal
Many clients find it helpful to write down insights, goals, or thoughts during therapy. We’ll also provide handouts and worksheets you may want to keep organized.

6. Reusable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is important for mental clarity and focus — and San Diego stays sunny most of the year!

Optional but Encouraged

  • Snack or lunch if attending full-day PHP (we provide breaks, but meals are not provided)

  • Phone charger or small tote bag for essentials

  • Reading material related to recovery or mental wellness

  • List of emergency contacts for our records

What Not to Bring

To protect all clients and maintain a supportive treatment environment, please do not bring the following:

  • Weapons of any kind

  • Drugs, alcohol, or paraphernalia

  • Over-the-counter medications not pre-approved by staff

  • Aerosol sprays or strong fragrances (scent-free space)

  • Valuables or large amounts of cash

  • Disruptive electronics (e.g., video games, speakers)

Phones are permitted but must be used respectfully and may be restricted during group sessions.

If You’re Enrolled in MAT

If you’re starting Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) such as Suboxone or Naltrexone, our medical team will guide you through any additional prep — including lab work, medical records, and recent medication history. Bring anything relevant to your medication or primary care provider.

Emotional Preparation

While packing your essentials, we also encourage you to take a moment to:

  • Reflect on why you’re starting treatment

  • Set a few personal intentions (even if you’re unsure of goals)

  • Remind yourself: it’s okay to be nervous. We’re here for you.

We’ve helped hundreds of individuals take this step. You’re not alone — and you’re not expected to be perfect.
